The Splendid Fairy-wren is one of the cutest Fairy-wrens in Australia. It is easy to see how this bird got its name when viewing the male in breeding plumage. The male sports a number of shades of blue and easily stands out in the Australian Outback. Splendid Fairy-wrens live in arid to semi-arid areas, prefering dense shrublands of acacia and mallee eucalypt.
The Story Behind The Photo
In August of 2012 I took my first long birding adventure with my good mate Heyn. We travelled over 1200km to a Birdlife Australia Reserve in South Australia named Gluepot. Gluepot is an old cattle station that was purchased and is now a bird reserve. It was an amazing experience seeing all of these new species of birds. The Splended Fairy-wren was the highlight with its shades of blue.
We went to an area known as the old airstrip to try and photograph Honeyeaters that were feeding on the Eremophila flowers. We had a good session in the airstrip and as I was walking towards the car in the later afternoon I spotted a family of Splendid Fairy-wren hoping around on some fallen tree. I spotted the male and rattled off a number of shots which resulted in the image above. This is one of my best selling photographs and a favourite of many.
